Sagaponack Studio

Initially built as a weekend cottage for one, this Bridgehampton, NY residence has undergone a series of architectural modifications. This most recent expansion now accommodates the full-time residence of husband and wife, their toddler and professional studio space.

Taking cues from the neighboring farm buildings, the project consists of three components. The renovated main house, holds the living room, dining room, kitchen and its second floor with three bedrooms and baths. The ‘barn’ contains the studio on the first floor and master suite on the second. Lastly, a twenty five foot long, one story connector creates a physical and psychological separation between the main house and barn while housing indoor and outdoor storage.

The modern interpretation of the barn is achieved by the composition of the primary facade. While appearing as two stories, in reality the central opening is composed of two glass and aluminum garage doors on both the first and second floors, stacked vertically. Custom mahogany screen doors that slide into pockets within the exterior wall and two story, cedar shutters complete the image.

Wrap-around, exterior mahogany stairs form two sides of a bluestone ‘amphitheatre’ patio between the two main structures. This outdoor dining area is completed by a low stone wall that accommodates grill, wood storage and outdoor fireplace.
