SpringwoodsLocated on a slightly sloping, wooded lot, the design solution for this 1,800 square foot addition to a 1980's 'contemporary saltbox', spec home addresses three particular deficiencies with the existing house and property which include: no sense of 'arrival', a disconnect between indoor and outdoor spaces and inadequate entertaining amenities. Three, one story additions, identified by large expanses of glass, and clear finished, horizontal, cedar siding surround the existing house in a pinwheel arrangement. The first, a long, horizontal volume, arranged perpendicular to the primary axis of the house relocates the main entry from the service side to a new foyer, adjacent to the living room. Additional program elements in this construction include a new dining room, kitchen expansion and powder room. The roof of this volume extends well beyond the enclosed space, towards the pool to form an exterior threshold to the new outdoor patio and pool area. At the opposite end of the living room and a few feet lower than the main floor, a second addition contains a media room and home office. When needed, this room can be divided from the rest of the house by a floor to ceiling, wall to wall, pivoting panel that along with the stair landing and office built-ins, create a series of elements that combine to diffuse the physical characteristics of a wall while affording all of its privacy. The third structure is comprised of service elements such as a two-car garage, mudroom and basement access. Renovation to the master suite and kitchen complete the project scope. Construction begins June of 2006.
