St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center

The Patient Care Tower at SFHMC, completed in 1996, is a ten story, 375,000 s.f., partial replacement facility, housing ambulatory care, intensive care and nursing units.

Complex site conditions and the strategic posture of the St. Francis site within the city of Hartford resulted in the architectural framework of the design to be that of a ‘composite building’ – an assemblage of asymmetrical components, organized by a strong, centralized mass, giving identity to the whole. These independent pieces are in that way freed to resolve multiple site conditions, inherent in a large, multi-departmental building so closely tied to the urban condition. Outdoor spaces, neighboring architecture, site lines and traffic are all criteria that help shape the form.

The Patient Care Tower was the only non-theoretical project to be awarded a First Citation from the Boston Society of Architect’s in 1995.
